She is finishing her two years as soon as we start ours, and one of us will be replacing her at her site. She and her husband, a health volunteer, are amazingly guapo. Guapo means hard working. They love their site and have done some great work there. It is very possible that I will end up there, so I´m keeping my mind open. Actually, I have a feeling that I won´t be assigned to this site because it´s extremely far off of the main route. Because of my allergy to insect stings, I´ll need to be closer to the route in case of emergency... toca madera! (touch wood in castellano) Oh, interesting side note is that the word espanol is not common here. Castellano is the more common term for spanish... Sorry about the missing punctuation, but this keyboard is a little bonky! Okay, setting my parents´ minds at rest... I do not have a parasite. During this site visit, I became COVERED with bites or something. So, we went to the hospital, but the hospital was closed. We then went to the doctor´s office. The first morning we were in Cusco 2 members of the group and I caught a flight to Puerto Maldonado, a city in the middle of the Amazon, the temperature was ridiculously hot and sunny, 28ºC and it was yet to reach 9am! After a 2 hour boat ride down the river we reached our lodge, which was run by a very nice French lady who made everyone feel at home, our guide was also very friendly and helped us make the most of our time in the rainforest. Whilst staying at the "Caymon Lodge" we did many hikes and saw a lot of wildlife, again like in the Pantonal, we managed to do a bit of Piranha fishing, and again I went in the water with them, this time was slightly more scary because before jumping in I could hear the Piranhas nibbling at the boat I was jumping in from! The nights were also comfortable, mosquito nets, bug spray and Malarone tablets helped me stay bite free and we were catered for by students from Lima University studying hospitality so everything went well. Our cab was running a little late so we were some of the last people to board the bus, which was filled with two hiking groups. We had a 2 hour bus ride to Mollepata where the 2 groups separated, and we had some breakfast there before starting the hike. At breakfast we all introduced ourselves to the other people in the hike. There were 10 of us plus our guide John. It was quite a diverse group: a girl from Lima, a guy from France, a guy from Canada, a girl from Korea, a married couple from Brazil, and a guy and a girl from England. All in all a very fun and interesting group of people, and we all got along really well, although there were some language barriers at times. The hike included a guide, meals, tents, and sleeping pads - pretty much all of the essentials besides a sleeping bag and clothes. There was also truck on the first day and horses later in the trek to carry our packs for us. The first part of the hike was all uphill. We walked all morning, stopping for lunch 4 hours after we began. It should have only taken us 3 hours, but myself and a few others were lagging behind schedule. I've ...

We drove with the windows down because using the air conditioning might over heat the engine. Its so hot already that the engine is boiling all by itself. The problem with the engine is that its on the inside of the car between our seats. That means that after driving all day the engine releases all its heat into the van where we sleep. Yah, not so nice when your already dying of heat. We stopped at a roadhouse for some icecream and some ice to keep our cooler and our water cold. When we keep water in the front it gets hot instantly and tastes like poop. So we figured out a way to counteract this. We just added teas leaves to the bottle. Now we were drinking delicious hot tea! Sounds strange but it was more appetizing and we needed fluids! As we drove we were attacked by tumbleweeds sweeping across the highway and we watched dust cyclones form and disappear in the distance. It was beautiful and desolate but most of all it was hot. Our skin burned from the sun and constant application of sun screen was needed especially for the drivers right arm which no matter how hard we tried is more tanned then the left arm now. We arrived at our pre-booked hostel half an hour later, searching whilst the sun bore down on us, for the bell we were told to ring on arrival. There was none. After hiding in the shadow of the door debating for 10 minutes on what we should do, the door opened and there stood, in only his boxers, Eric the hostel owner and behind him the bell. Grunting hello Eric showed us to our room and then disappeared presumably back to bed. Whilst I collapsed on the bed in the room, which I swear was hotter than outside, Andy began to notice the number of Mozzies, Spiders and Cockroaches adorning the floor, walls and ceiling. In seconds Andy had changed from normal backpacker to top class pest exterminator with all the tools of the trade (torch, hands, book, shoe). Not wanting to spoil his fun (or get involved) I shut my eyes to exclamations of "that´sa huge one", "come on, out of the room" and "damn, it went under the bed". Eventually realising that I would not get any sleep until all bugs were either killed or escorted from the room, I opened my eyes and found Andy sweeping the walls with his torch killing Mosquito´s on sight. Marty told me that they were completely sold out that night due to labor day weekend, and that he had no other rooms available. Marty told me I can check out and be refunded the complete money. Obviously, there were no other rooms available in any of the area hotels, and since both me and my wife had driven from Los Angeles that day, we were dead tired and could not drive back that same 8 hr stretch back at 11 pm in the night. We awoke on our last morning in Phnom Penh to discover that Mark had been bitten by bed bugs all over his arms and had some pretty nasty welts. Poor Marky! I was pretty glad to be leaving Phnom Penh as it wasn't exactly my favourite place. Pretty filthy, actually, and the people selling stuff on the street just wouldn't take no for an answer. I know they are just trying to make a living but they can be very persistent. "NO! I don't want to buy a lighter!!". Pretty sure Mark was the same. So we arranged for a lovely tuk tuk driver to take us to the airport. Unfortunately, about 5 minutes after we left, we came across a massive traffic jam. For some reason, the government had completely closed off the bridge which you take to get to the airport. The roads were chaos! So the tuk tuk driver suggested we take motorcyles instead as they would be able to go the long way around a lot quicker than him. We were a wee bit dubious as to how it would work, but in the end we both got our own motorcycle taxi and carried our backpacks all the way to the airport. We made it in time for our flight to Ho Chi Minh City in the end ...

It is bright red and is used to cool blood and medicinally lowers blood pressure. We arrived in Aswan fairly earl in the morning and were driven straight to the hotel. We were staying in the Sara hotel, overlooking the Nile, right in the heart of the Nubian Desert. After a lazy afternoon we headed by boat to Philae temple, which was amazing. It on a small island and was saved from another location that flooded due to the abrupt building of the two dams in Aswan. After that we took the boats to the westbank of the Nile, drifting through the gorgeous scenery of rich plant life right between the Nile and the desert (quite a contrast), past the city, elephantine Island, desert and many mango trees. We docked at a little 'beach' for a quick swim and strole around the sandy hills. As everywhere in Egypt we were always approached by locals (that seem to pop out from behind bushes and the sand) that were selling us local souvenirs and artifacts. I was really dreading it but with a combination of interesting scenery, a reclining chair and my ipod ( 1000 thank yous to Thomas!!!) I arrived in Chiang Mai feeling excited about my next week and a half. That was until I found my guesthouse and was shown my room. "We have chosen this one for you" said the owner and so had 2 spiders, numerous bed bugs and some guys beard hair (still in the sink). I had to shower and did so in a fashion very similar to being at the public swimming baths, nothing touching the floor and nobody seeing anything!! Wanted to shut the curtains before I left the room, but who'd have guessed that gaffer tape could be used instead of a pole and rings, ingenious! Got them shut and went out looking for some inner karma. With the city being much bigger than I had thought I managed to visit about 5 wats/temples during the day. They were all magnificent to look at (as you can see from the pictures). The biggest temple is at the end of my road and I managed to watch the monks gathering to chant. The Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci) seems to be the most common pest in dwellings of Britain. The beetle is fairly small and strongly convex, rather like a tiny ladybird, with a characteristic mottled pattern of yellow, black and whitish dense scales. After peeping through the curtains of Mystery Machine, checking all angles for evidence of nasties, we braved it and opened the sliding door. We cautiously slipped out of the vehicle, scanned the place and considered our next footsteps carefully! We may be poisened by our infected insects bites (Malaria tablets should be compulsary to come here!!) but at least the crocs, spiders or snakes didn't get us and as an extra bonus, we didn't get skinned alive by the imaginary psyco-killer bush man!! There are no showers or sinks here, so we had a scrub from the washing bowl with left over kettle water. Starting to feel a bit smelly now, let alone hairy!! Yuk!! My hair has taken a turn for the worse and has decided to assemble into uncontrolable dredlocks! I knew my beauty routine was gonna be limited here but this is just not even slightly attractive!! My fantasy world of Tarzan and Jane is not quite the same in real life! To top it all off - Ladies week!! Could it get any worse!!?? Anyhoo, we packed up camp a decided to do what we do best at home, that is, follow Brown signs (try it next time you're bored on a Sunday Morning ...

So we head off to the newly built hotel next door that has aircon, free wi-fi, big rooms with satellite TV and lovely new en-quite bathrooms - we're sold as we treat ourselves to the 4 star upgrade (6 star for Africa though!). I'm struggling so spend the rest of the day in bed watching tv and doing a bit of blogging. Jules has a few beers with the gang who are slowly infiltrating the hotel to make use of the wi-fi. AK and Lara cave when they see the place and also upgrade for the three night stay, taking advantage of the deal we did on the room prices. Entry from: Bordeaux, France Entry Title: "Beautiful city but glad to leave" Entry: "29TH JUNE 2010 - This morning at 8am we leave San Sebastian. We wish we could stay longer as its a great place to relax and not have to do so much sightseeing. We only travel for about 3 hours and we arrive in Bordeaux, France. First impression, its beautiful, reminded us of a bigger version of Avignon. We check into our accommodation, Hotel Studio and once again we are sent off to another block of apartments (a lot of hotels/hostels have a main block with reception and then apartments scattered all over the place). We walk to our room which is still in the same street and open the door, Oh my god this place is so run down, its absolutely "handsome". It reminded me of some really run down dodgy place in Sydney. At least the bed is decent and the bathroom is clean. We actually had two rooms, one with a queen bed and one with two singles. We dump our stuff and go for a walk. It is so muggy and hot and felt quite uncomfortable. We walk around the town checking out some beautiful spots and then decide to go the cathedral. As we were walking through this area it was so run down and dodgy, an area full of Middle East/Arabic influence, lots of rubbish and groups of young guys that I made sure we avoided, its a very seedy ...
